It will be on 10-10-10 in Tyler, TX. Anyone else out there planning on doing this one? There is a 5K, half, and full. The best part is the medal. It has a rose as the medal part. Check out the website (click here) and look. Too cute. Full marathon participants get roses at the finish line. (I am a little bummed that the half participants don't get those too).
I think I might have a couple of friends semi-talked into going. My friend Jennifer and my friend Kathy are considering it, as well as my lunchtime running buddy, Donny. So, we'll see I guess. However, if anyone wants to fly in and needs an airport pickup and a hotel buddy, let me know. (ahem, Katye)
So, now I have tons of questions for you experienced half people out there.
- If I start my training next week, I should be completed with it about 3 weeks before the half. What do I do? Add some extra mileage in on those weeks? Keep increasing mileage? I am nervous about my longest run on the program being 10 miles before the real thing
- After you did your first half, how long did you wait for another? There is one really close to home four weeks later. Realistically, should I shoot for that one too?
- How long does a long run have to be before you bring along Gu or something like that?
I know I have more questions, but I can't remember them. Off to bed. Have a good night!
Melissa

Congrats on registering for your first half! I have only done one and it was awesome (hard but awesome).
- I would start the training program so you end on race day. Training plans are set up to have you peak at that point, so you might peak too early if you start now. Just keep your mileage up right now, then start the actual plan in 3 weeks
-Gu, I usually bring Gu with me if I am going to run 6 miles or more (I also bring water at this mileage too)
Good luck :)
How exciting! I'm doing my first half on November 20, otherwise I'd think about doing that one with you. Obviously I'm new to this type of training so I have nothing but good wishes to offer you - good luck with this, Melissa, and congratulations on making such a huge decision!
Yahoo!! Very exciting. While I think you're crazy, I know it'll be a great accomplishment when you cross that finish line!!! Happy training!
If I can do it I KNOW you can. I have been waiting you to go for the half marathon for awhile. Also, you have PLENTY of time to get ready.
Now for training. So far what is your longest distance? 3.1, 4 or 5 miles? If you longest run to date is 4 miles take one day a week where you add an extra mile. For example Sundays are my long run days and each week I add one more mile in. So if you can do 4 miles right now run 5 miles on Sunday and next week run 6 miles.
Since you have plenty of time to train, every three weeks or so cut back on your long runs or skip one week.
If you are going to be gone longer than 60 to 90 minutes it is good to bring some GU. Don't forget after your run to get some protein.
1/2 marathons are my favorite! The training is doable for busy moms! ;)
I need to commit myself to doing a fall 1/2. Ideally I do a spring and fall 1/2, it keeps me running! :)
Have a great weekend!
This is exciting news! Can't wait to follow your training.
I've started my training but keep hanging at week 2. It's a 28 week program which I should have finished around the end of the year. I've planned to do a half in April next year so I might pick up a new short training schedule by then.
I have no tips for you as I'm new at this too so I'll subscribe to your comments and might learn a thing or two myself.
Good luck with the training.
How exciting! I'm sending you lots of luck via the internet vib system. ;)
I have also heard that you should end your training program on race day, but you could just get in some great runs from now until your training would start. Or spend this time alternating between some runs and swimming or biking.
So tempting, I would love to come run with you and your firends.
I'm still working on getting this darn knee in decent shape. I doubt that I'll get to do my h/m this year. But I haven't given up yet.
I wish I could give you some tips for the h/m but maybe I'll come back her eand ask you some questions when it's time for mine.
Good Luck!
(oh and did ya save me a piece of pizza?) ;)

Congrats!! I only did a 10-miler before the actual race b/c they say you don't need to do the full 13 before the half. That scared me but I still finished the race, so obviously it was OK. I had brought honey stinger chews but ended up barely eating them during the run. I drank water throughout but didn't mess with gatorade since I had never trained with it. Good luck!!
Pay somebody back in his own coin.................................................................
Yay for your first half!!! Very excited for you!!!!
I'm not sure what training program you're following but what I'd do is repeat a couple of the long run weeks before jumping up to the next level. I mean, if you have a 10-miler one week and then 11 the following, so repeat the 10. Another option is to rest a week with lower mileage and doing some swimming or something. Really, the point is to peak at the right time so another option would be to just add some mileage right now and then start the program at the 18 weeks, as it suggests.
I'd start playing with the GU around 5-6 miles, taking one before you run. Maybe you don't NEED it then but everyone reacts differently to all these products out there and you want to make sure your stomach can tolerate them. Around 8 miles is when you want to take one in the middle of your run, to see how you react to it affecting your run.
I know you asked me last week about the treadmill and how I don't kill myself from boredom on it for long runs. I guess I've done so much running on the treadmill that it really doesn't bother me from time to time. Right now, my heel is having issues and it seems to like the treadmill a little better. I DO have to keep myself occupied by wearing my iPod while watching a movie (if I use mine at home) and sometimes I even have a book mounted up there. The key is to break it up into segments. Last week I ran 21 and I broke it up into 3 segments of 7 miles where I'd run upstairs and get more water and a gel and part of a banana and potty break, then it gives you a little bit of a break. I also break it up by varying the pace and the incline. Just some tips. It's not easy but it's really what I need to do right now.
Ok, that's the longest comment ever. Haha. So excited you signed up for the half...you're going to have a blast!!! YAY!
So exciting!
I waited 6mo between my first and 2nd. But only 3wks between my 2nd and 3rd halfs. The only reason I waited is there wasn't a race I wanted to run.
