Wednesday was an optional 2 mile run. Being the overachiever that I am (sarcasm people...it doesn't convey well on these here internets), I got in 2.79 miles and the last part of that was some sprints. I am super proud of them. 6:30, 5:40, and 6:25. You know, if I wasn't so lazy, I probably could run a much faster 5K than I actually do.
Thursday called for another 3.5, but I spent all day teaching safety classes and was spent. So, nothing there. :( However, Friday night, I did 3.68 and felt awesome. I had some stretches in there where I comfortably maintained a pace of 8:30 (just not for super long periods of time). It's soooo hot that I have to mix in more walking than I would like (97 degrees when I went out Friday).
My next run was scheduled for yesterday. It was to be a 5 mile run. However, Saturday night I went and bought some Clif mini bars and Gu Chomps, and some other things (look for my review soon) to try out. I ate a Clif bar as a snack about 2 hours before I was going to leave the house. I was going to have to get the run in a few hours before I really wanted to due to not having a kid-sitter and about 30 minutes before the run, my stomach started to protest the Clif bar. I still got out there, but I didn't make it far. The bar + the heat = not a good combo.
Not a super big deal though. I read a book (The late, lamented Molly Marx...loved it!!!) and snuggled with my babies. I'm going to attempt that 5 mile run tomorrow at lunch. I have a new running buddy who is supposed to meet me for a run tomorrow. So, maybe he'll be up for it. I'm a little intimidated. He has done Ironman's in the past and I think he's a pretty fast runner. I guess I can always tell him to leave me. :)

I don't know how you exercise in the heat. That sounds way too oppressive.
Can't you sneak out of the house at 10-11pm and do your run then, or if you're an early riser, in the AM? Running at lunchtime just seems to be the worst of all times to pick, but - I know - if it's all you got, you have to make the best of it.
Good luck! And here's a swift kick (although I don't think you need it)!

DONT BE A WUSS!
how's that for a kick in the butt? lol. my 2nd half training plan started last week but i was traveling all week and well just couldnt muster enough strength to get out there and get it done. this week is a whole new week though.
Sounds like you're already doing just fine without a kick in the butt. Keep up the great work, Melissa.
Lunchtime running, really? I'd be a sweaty, stinky mess and no one would let me near them, LOL. You really don't need a kick in the butt...you are doing great!
Sounds like a legit reason to not finish the 5 miles. I just know you'll suck it up and get it done tomorrow :)
When's your half? I'm guessing that you're doing Hal Higdon's schedule since your runs pretty much look the same as mine. I love the plan! Don't stress about missing a day.. just make sure you get in the long runs at some point in the week. I feel like those are the most important part.
I totally understand you on the heat!!! Way to get out there! I hope you have a wonderful week :)

I know i'm late on this..but hopefully you got the kick you needed;-)
Sure it's hot, but training properly in the heat will make you a better, more resilient runner. Go to Youtube and look for videos about the Badwater 135 race. I'm not saying that you should go out and do that race but look at those lunatics who race through Death Valley in the middle of July ("Death" is right in the title!!).
They don't live in Death Valley so they do crazy stuff like put a treadmill in the sauna at 200F and build up their heat tolerance slowly over time. They run outdoors during the hottest part of the day wearing extra layers of clothes to heat them up. They work out their ideal hydration and electrolyte needs to conquer 135 miles through the hottest place in the US.
When they run the rest of the year they have zero problems with anything but the coldest temperatures. My point to you is that your heat wave is an opportunity to rise up over the weather and conquer it. It's totally possible for you to beat the heat.
When I started running 20 years ago it was in the dust bowl Los Angeles basin where it was 105F and dry all summer. I could either learn to run in the heat or wait until late fall to start running. Over a couple months of working up to it my body got used to the heat and I barely thought about it as long as I kept minimally hydrated. To this day I'm still pretty good in the heat and sweat less than anyone else I've run with.
It's an opportunity for you to develop your inner bad-ass.
Also, sorry to see that Chinese spam guy found you.
